I noticed you don't get very many comments ever since they tucked you away as a "featured" (lol) writer. Do you miss the good old days?

There is an influenza A outbreak that is raging through Buffalo that is not what the vaccine was made for - I would not be surprised if more sabres go down with this. Several nursing homes are on quarantine - could be the mumps but my money is on the new flu strain...

Yeah, most people got the trivalent vaccine- which has components for 2 flu A types and 1 flu B type. The 2 flu A types are H3N2 and H1N1. The H3N2 in the vaccine is the same as last years, problem is, the actual H3N2 thats circulating drifted enough that the vaccine isnt a great match. Influenza is rotten like that, it can drift, or worse shift. The vaccines are basically grown in chicken eggs and they have to start the whole process in like may if they wanna vaccinate everybody in north america by november. The good news is that tamiflu is still effective against the new drifted H3N2, so if you think youre sick with the flu, theres medicine that helps.

I think the problem with mumps is that most vaccines only stimulate protective antibodies in 85-95% of the people who receive the vaccine. Crosby apparently has received MMR (measles mumps rubella) twice and didnt respond well enough to the mumps component to have protection. Most viruses allow for something called herd immunity. Basically, if most people are immune, a virus doesnt have a chance to get a foothold, and it stops spreading. But that doesnt help so much if youre the one that didnt make antibodies. And hockey players are in close quarters with teammates, water bottles and stuff, easy for a bunch of guys to catch stuff.
